Change in family name to Gaines from Gonyea
One family story
states the name was changed after Henry Albert Gonyea did intelligence Work in
Providence for Pinkerton as the FBI was yet to be founded. He was reported to
have worked on a machine next to a suspected German spy during World War I! Is
this true? Beats me but it’s a great story!

written down the way they sounded. The next generation reverts to a true French
spelling!
